How well a printer understands its costs and product and customer mix—as well as its relative productivity and pricing for different mixes of work—can drive its improving profitability. If not studied and understood, it’s inevitable that the printer will be in a “stuck” position or profit purgatory (i.e. never really improving). For instance, factory wage costs are not closely dependent on whether or not a printer produces a project. Thus, a few plants have gone to “flexible hours,” depending on whether or not there’s enough work. Most printers recognize that their production teams have different speeds of production. When work’s not backed-up or the printer has work it’s not familiar with—or it has a production mix that doesn’t fit its equipment and personnel—production slows.
