“Commit yourself to a dream……Why?....Because you can always rest assured that you succeeded in life’s most important battle – you defeated the fear of trying…”…………………………….Robert H. Schuller

INTRODUCTION:

“Cross-train”…..”Cross-train”….”Cross-train”…..

Those words spontaneously rang-out from a highly respected V.P. of Manufacturing --- whose company in my observation --- is continuing to prepare for:

(a) Continued Acquisitions….

(b) Continued Organic Growth….. and

(c) ….an Outstanding Market Reputation for Reliability….Quality…. and……Financial Performance.

Is it a surprise that his organization is growing by about 20%+ a year…..!

His comments alerted me to what I too often see at organizations I visit….. either no Cross-Training…..or…..a Cross-Training Chart….and Schedule…. that’s….

  • Not up-to-date…….
  • Not frequent in personnel’s cross-training activities.
  • Not examined for updating ---  when new technologies and equipment --- are installed.

Most of us have been victims of an employee’s unavoidable absence…or departure --- leaving us….and a customer or two (or three, or four) --- with unavoidable, delayed or poor quality shipments.

And the horrendous cost of those “missteps” --- doesn’t end with an unhappy customer….or embarrassment.….we experience their “reverberating, damaging costs” --- through future pricing pressures…. lost future work…. and market reputation --- through customers’ shared conversations --- we never directly knew --- occurred.

SUMMARY:

Training and Cross-training are an “intentional discipline….that can and should --- involve….and integrate --- every department……They are conducted either with “integrity of purpose” --- to support our mission and economic future….or they are compromised….adversely affecting everything….and everyone…..they touch….and…

Everyone…..knows it…..!.

The difference in those two value-systems and cultures --- is obvious…...

What does your company’s value system…and culture….look like…..?

“If you think you can’t afford training and “cross-training”…. that’s needed….you’re already paying for it….you just don’t get to receive the benefits….”……
