INTRODUCTION:

Serving on the ACCGC (Accrediting Council for Collegiate Graphic Communications) Board --- has “opened my eyes” --- to the generosity and impact that company owners can have --- on thousands of students….and faculty’s….professional…and family lives.

Those company owners, by their unselfish service, contributions of money, in-kind supplies and equipment, and thoughtful suggestions --- impact our industry --- to its farthest corners………….

For example, Faculty and a Program Chair group discussion recently included,

  • Do we need to add,  “USPS Mailing Regulations”, and “How and  when to negotiate with USPS” --- to our curriculum?
  • Would it be helpful for our students’ Internships to include, “Development and Updating of the sponsor’s website.”
  • “What do we need to add to our curriculum… that would positively impact companies our graduates go to work for…?”
  • Would it be helpful for our students’ Internships to include developing, “Web-to-Print Portals ” --- for some of the sponsor’s customers?”
  • Would adding a “Storage & Fulfillment Module” to our curriculum --- be of interest to potential employers --- for capturing additional revenues, margins, and improving company stability?

SUMMARY:

“Curriculum Advisory Councils” provide many forward-reaching benefits --- to those who choose to serve….though not all those benefits are immediately measurable.

Summers are ideal for recruiting and hiring Interns, particularly as you have long-term employees asking for “time-off” for family vacations.

Most organizations have projects….important projects --- waiting for “just the right talent” to be available.

Why do the largest organizations in our industry support their local graphic arts university programs?

Because it’s smart, very smart ---  to do so…….That support tends to reward those organizations with identification of the best talent --- coming into our industry.
